March Book of the Month Response

FCAT Creativity

So WHO is this so called F”Cat”? What were his/her intentions when making this big ‘ole exam? Here is what the creative kids in our class thought as they practiced writing from a different perspective!

Here is a video of some comprehension songs. We’ve sung these songs since last year, so last week we took just a few minutes to come up with a little music video for them.

Let’s Say Thanks to Our Armed Forces

Today we did a really neat thing! Every student wrote a short postcard to an soldier in the armed forces! How did we do this? Well, we simply went to the website Let’s Say Thanks and followed the directions. Basically how it works:

- Students choose a postcard cover from a great selection of patriotic student artwork

- Students chose to then write their own personal message to a troop member

- Click “Submit” and we were done!

Now all our postcards are waiting to be printed by the Xerox corporation and will be sent to a person currently serving our country.

What a great way to have students connect with our world and our Februrary Book of the Month:

The Impossible Patriotism Project

Miss Russell and I had a sweet time dictating the thankful words of each student!

Check it our for yourself! You can send as many as you want!

Mad about Languge!

Today I whipped out the ‘ole MadLibs. If you  havent’ heard of them they are stories written with missing words. Those words are identified as whatever part of speech they are: noun, verb, adjective, adverb… Then the readers/players choose words- not knowing the topic of the story- and fill in the story blanks with a word matching the given part of speech. For example if the blank calls for a noun (a person, place or thing) a player might respond with “horse,” or “spaghetti,” or “mall”… Once all the blanks have been filled with the often funny, random words, then the silly story is read aloud!

So, our story today ended up being quite funny! I told the students I would post it, so here it is! (The words the students chose are bolded.)

The Envivroment

Today, many scientists and colleg pigs tell us that we are wiggling the atmosphere and spitting the water all over the world. I fact, in about 2,500 years, the air will be eighty percent owl pellets because we are cutting down all fo the dumbo pants in the Brazillian Luke forest. Here in the United States, many manufacturers of toxic things like ponies or toilets  take their wast material and dump it into the ocean or in Dunkin’ Donuts. We often have to close beaches and keep people form going inot the coke because it is so polluted. But there are some hideous things you can do to help protect our environment. You can write smelly letters to your congressperson. You can also recycle underwear drawers. With just a bit of effort, all hobos can help to make our planet blue and cheesy again.

(PS- My favorite part is the toxic ponies at Dunkin Donuts! What is yours? Maybe you could write your own MadLib and put it on your blog!)

Our Despereaux Endings: Finally They’re Here!

I posted a bit back about reading The Tale of Despereaux with my students. We absolutely loved it! Well, before we actually finished the book and the movie, I had our students for groups and discuss their predicions for the end of the story. These voicethread videos are the culmination of those discussions. Within their groups, students came up with a possible ending. Then they turned their idea into a large comic strip, of sorts, with a script. Later they worked together to record their voices over their pictures on this great application! :) www.voicethread.com

We hope you enjoy and then ask your child how the book REALLY ended!
